Galle District

Introduction

Galle is one of the most popular leisure tourist destinations in Sri Lanka, situated in the southern part, approximately 119 kilometres from Colombo. Galle is all about beautiful beaches and great food. Galle offers wonderful beaches where you can spend the afternoon being pampered in a local spa, dine on fresh seafood at excellent international restaurants.

Galle city is gifted with many attractions as the city holds many beautiful places with heavenly views. Visitors flock to the ancient Dutch Fort, Madoll Duwa, Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa beaches and other recreational attractions to enjoy the diversity of Galle with historic and natural sites. The Dutch Fort, the main historical attraction in Galle, was built almost three hundred years ago and is one of the best preserved colonial sea fortresses in the whole of Asia.

Climate

The climate in Galle is similar to Colombo. The town experiences a hot tropical climate, and the monthly temperature settles around 29C – 31C throughout the year. The monsoons affect Galle from June to September and April to May, when as much as 200mm of rainfall can be expected during the month.
